Developing Ignitions with the Power Arc IDS Rapid Development System

We are currently interested in expanding our product line.  There will be no cost for the development work if Power Arc accepts the project.

Step 1

Choose an Ignition
       



The CD-Series ignitions are available in four models:
  • CD-1 1 cylinder or 2 cylinders wasted spark
  • CD-2 2 cylinders or 4 cylinders wasted spark
  • CD-3 3 cylinders or 6 cylinders wasted spark
  • CD-4 4 cylinders or 8 cylinders wasted spark


Choose an ignition based on the number of cylinders.  If the cylinder spread of the engine is symmetircal (45°, 90°, 120° or 180°) a single wasted spark coil (two outputs per core) for every two cylinders can be used.  For example if you have a 2 cylinder engine with 180° between cylinders you would need one coil core with two outputs and would use a CD-1 ignition to drive the single coil core. The number at the end of the ignition model number represends how many cores the ignition can drive.

If the cylinder angle or spread is not symetrical you typically need one single output coil per cylinder.
This usually applies to 2 cylinder engines only. You must determine the number of coil cores needed and then you can choose the corresponding ignition.  Contact  Power Arc if you have questions about which coil to use.

The CD-Series ignitions work on postive or negative chasis vehicles and can be mounted in a variety of different housings, distributors and distributor stems through the use of interchangeable ignition mounting adapters/stems.  All CD-Series ignitions can be programmed by the user to fit a specific engine or vehicle once the mechanical mounting hardware is developed.  Power Arc can also pre-program the ignition for your application before shipping if desired.

  Encoder Wheel Adapters


Power Arc can assist you in the development of a distributor stem if required. Ignition mounting adapters are used to align and attach the ignition in distributors or housings. A custom mounting adapter can usually be quickly and economically developedEncoder wheel adapters are used to attach the encoder wheel to a cam or crank shaft. Encoder adapters can be provided in different lengths and different center hole sizes. Power Arc has already produced distributor stems and adapters for some applications.  We can develop and manufacture stems and adapters for you.  Click here for more information on ignition sizes, stem and adapter drawings.  Contact Power Arc if you need help at this stage.

The MC-1 miniature coil is a small single core single tower coil that can be easily daisy chained (multiple coils can be wired to fire off the same control signal).  A single coil is used on one cylinder engines. Two coils may also be used with non-symetrical cylinder angles (one coil core per cylinder) on two cylinder engines, for  example when single firing a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.  Three or four coils can also be used on three and four cylinder engines.  One coil per cylinder is required.

The MC-2 miniature coil is a small single core dual tower coil that can be easily daisy chained (multiple coils can be wired to fire off the same control signal). This coil is used to waste spark engines with symetricaal cylinder angles (45°, 60°, 90° or 180°) or when dual firing a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.  One coil for every two cylinders is required.

The ST coil is a single core single tower coil A single coil is used on one cylinder engines. Two coils may also be used with non-symetrical cylinder angles (one coil core per cylinder) on two cylinder engines, for  example when single firing a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.   Three or four coils can also be used on three and four cylinder engines.  One coil per cylinder is required.

The SF dual core dual tower coil pack is used when single firing (one coil core per cylinder) Harley-Davidsons or for other two cylinder engines that do not have symetrical 180 degree opposed cylinders and require 2 separate coil cores. One coil pack for every two cylinders is required.

The DF single core dual tower coil is used to waste spark engines with symetricaal cylinder angles (45°, 60°, 90° or 180°) or when dual firing a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.  One coil for every two cylinders is required.

The QT-2 quad tower coil pack is a two core coil pack with four outputs.  It has two independent two output coils.  It is typically used to waste spark 4 or 8 cylinder engines. One coil pack is required for a 4 cylinder engine and two packs for an 8 cylinder engine.

Step 4
Develop Ignition Timing MAP and Program Ignition




Windows Tablet* with IDS Application, ECP (Edge Card Programmer) and CD-Series Ignition
* OTG adapter may be required for tablet


Develop an ignition timing MAP for your specific engine using the IDS development system.  Download the IDS application here.  For detailed information about developing a timing MAP in IDS go to the Help section of the IDS application once it has been installed.  Contact Power Arc if you need help developing a timing MAP.  Once the ignition curve/map is developed the igniton can be programed to meet the needs of your specific application.  All CD-Series ignitions can be programmed using the ECP adapter.
Step 5
Finalize Design

Send any artwork you desire for ignition stickers if the ignition is not Power Arc branded.
